The West Indian cedar is a plant species in the mahogany family and reaches a growth height of over 40 meters. The trunk diameter reaches up to 3 meters. The medium-weight and moderately durable wood of the West Indian cedar is often used as a substitute for mahogany due to its good machinability. In addition, the wood is an almost indispensable building material for concert guitar necks as well as cigar humidors.

The subtle smell of the wood harmonizes pleasantly with the cigar and at the same time keeps pests away from it. Essential oil is also extracted from the wood, which is called West Indian cedar oil.
Due to continued exploitation, this tree is considered endangered and is therefore on the Red List.
